Grant awarded to help more students go to college

Amarillo, Texas - Higher education will be with in reach of more Amarillo area students.

The Amarillo Area Foundation and the "No Limits - No Excuses" initiative received a grant for more than $290,000 Tuesday to help continue their efforts. This grant we're told will help to bring more students into the program.

Summer Hanners is on her way to achieving her dreams.

"I have got my certification for my CNA. I am working on phlebotomy. So, now I can see myself going somewhere. I'm not just going to be waiting tables. I'll be somewhere someday," Hanners says.

She says none of it would have been possible without the help from the "No Limits - No Excuses" program. Now, she is even a role model for her three children. But, she says she isn't stopping yet.

"I don't know what it's going to take for me to be content because now that I know I can do it, I don't want to stop until I'm where I want to be," Hanners says.

Grant money awarded by the non-profit corporation, TG, will help future students achieve their dreams.

"TG came to us at a time where we really needed assistance from a funding standpoint to sustain success coaches at West Texas A&M University, at Amarillo College, and at Amarillo Independent School District to help students overcome barriers to success," Clay Stribling, Amarillo Area Foundation President and CEO says.

President and CEO of TG, Sue McMillin, says they chose "No Limits - No Excuses" for their grant because of it's success rates.

"TG's public benefit program looks at student success and completion and how we can help make the great state of Texas more stronger, have an impact, graduate more students from college to make sure we have the right kind of workforce for the state of Texas going forward," McMillin says.

More success coaches and mentors will be able to be added because of the grant money.
