Several rural communities to receive assistance

Texas - Several rural communities in Texas struggling to get out of poverty will soon see a boost in economic development.

Additional resources will now be provided to them.

90 percent of America's persistent poverty counties are in rural America and a number of those counties are in Texas.

That's why the USDA is expanding its StrikeForce initiative to include our state.

The USDA wants to give farmers, food producers and other businesses equal and easier access to money available from the federal government.

Rural counties with the highest poverty will be the one's targeted.

Farm Service Agency loans, for states receiving help, were up almost 10 percent in 2012 over 2011 - even when the nation as a whole saw farm lending drop.

Rural housing loans were up more than 110 percent in 2012.

The USDA also has a food and nutrition service which aims to increase the number of children receiving free or reduced breakfast and increased food service for children during the summer.

In New Mexico, a mobile bus delivered meals to 45,000 children each weekday during the summer at 700 partner sites.
