Several rural communities to receive assistance

Texas - Several rural communities in Texas struggling to get out of poverty will soon see a boost in economic development.

Additional resources will now be provided to them.

90 percent of America's persistent poverty counties are in rural America and a number of those counties are in Texas.

That's why the USDA is expanding its StrikeForce initiative to include our state.

The USDA wants to give farmers, food producers and other businesses equal and easier access to money available from the federal government.

Rural counties with the highest poverty will be the one's targeted.

Farm Service Agency loans, for states receiving help, were up almost 10 percent in 2012 over 2011 - even when the nation as a whole saw farm lending drop.

Rural housing loans were up more than 110 percent in 2012.

The USDA also has a food and nutrition service which aims to increase the number of children receiving free or reduced breakfast and increased food service for children during the summer.

In New Mexico, a mobile bus delivered meals to 45,000 children each weekday during the summer at 700 partner sites.

    Maj. Gen. Brian McKiernan, who was welcomed to Fort Sill FIRES Center of Excellence as commanding general in July of 2016, will be leaving. Maj. Gen. McKiernan has been selected to be the Deputy Commanding General of 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg. Maj. Gen. Brian McKiernan has served as commanding general for the last year.

    We are hearing from a former Oklahoma correctional officer who says he's now in trouble with the law for trying to be a whistle blower. Back in May, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections launched an investigation into video that was captured at the Lexington Assessment and Reception Center. That video was caught by a now former correctional officer, who is facing possible jail time.
