Human trafficking awareness at Canyon High School

Posted: Updated:

Canyon, TX - Human trafficking is a reality across the United States and right here at home, and a local school district is working to educate our children on the issue.

On Wednesday (Mar. 27th), Canyon High School's speech and debate team opened up the floor for discussion.

According to a recent report from the state Attorney General's Office, there have been 678 human trafficking cases in Texas since 2007, and victims of sex trafficking are almost exclusively teenage girls.

Just last year, an Amarillo man was sentenced to 26 years for forcing a 14 year-old girl into prostitution.

Illegal labor trafficking is also a significant issue, as Texas shares a wide and porous border with Mexico and a huge agricultural sector.
