Area foster children in need of assistance

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Hundreds of area children in foster care need the support of the community as they age out of the system.

There are more than 28,000 children in foster care in Texas.

As of February of this year, there were 204 in Potter County and 160 in Randall County.

There are even more within the rest of the Texas Panhandle.

When the child turns 18 they age out of the foster care system.

According to childrensrights.org, studies show without family or assistance these young people are at high risk of homelessness, joblessness, illness and incarceration.

As well as welfare dependency, early pregnancy and physical victimization.

That's why Amarillo College first created the non-profit organization called Badger Hearts which aims to help in the transition.

Today they will be having a fundraiser from 10 am to 2 pm near the clock tower on the Amarillo College campus on Washington Street.

All proceeds will go toward giving around 10-20 children aging from the system and who are graduating high school, a hope chest filled with household items that they can use.
