Five people were taken to an Amarillo hospital Saturday night after the SUV they were riding in was hit by semi truck.

The SUV was attempting to use the turnaround on I-40 near Hope Road when a semi hit the car from the side.

The driver of the semi and his passenger were not injured, but all five people riding in the SUV were taken to a hospital. The severity of their injuries is unknown at this time.

Traffic was also backed up going east bound on I-40 while officers worked to clear the scene.
