Okla. Panel OKs Weapons In Some Private Schools

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - An Oklahoma Senate committee has approved a proposal that would let the state's private schools choose whether to allow concealed firearms on their grounds.

The Education Committee passed the proposal without opposition Monday, sending it to the full Senate for consideration. Sen. Sally Kern of Oklahoma City first introduced it in the House, where it was approved in February.

The bill would let people licensed to carry concealed or unconcealed guns take their weapons onto private school grounds if the school allows it. It also protects private schools from legal liability from that decision except for "acts of gross misconduct."

The House has also approved a measure to let teachers in public schools carry weapons if they go through training and their district allows it.
