LPS Names New Superintendent

LAWTON, Okla_Lawton Public Schools announced their next superintendent Monday evening.

The Board of Education unanimously approved Dr. Tom Deighan as the man for the job.

He has nearly 20 years of experience in Oklahoma Public Schools as a teacher, principal and most recently as superintendent of Ringwood Public Schools.

Deighan said the very first thing he wants to do is get to know as many people as possible, and hear what those already in the district have to say. He said he's excited to come to work in a bigger district and thinks it's his small-town experience that really set him apart from the other candidates.

"At the end of the day I do believe everybody believes their children attend a small school, " Deighan said. "You pull up and see the same kids every day and the same principal and the same parents, and so that sense of community translates no matter where you are."

He's the candidate that came out on top after a 3 month interview process. School Board President Kent Jester said it was obvious Deighan was the right person for the job.

"It's an opportunity for the board to see Lawton through a different lens because I can see so many great things that are going on here, and that fresh enthusiasm and excitement really sparked some interest in the board, " Deighan explained.

With Barry Beauchamp serving LPS for many years, Deighan hopes to work closely with him over the coming months to make the transition as smooth as possible. He said he can only hope to carry on the same kind of legacy Beauchamp has left.

"If I can build upon his successes and reacquaint the people of Lawton with the incredible success that schools already have I will count myself as a success, " said Deighan.

Deighan wants to be an approachable figure to everyone in the district. He said he likes to be a familiar face to students, and he's most eager to work closely with district staff of every level.

"Everything comes down to people. I have learned that no matter what you do, where you do it you rely on the people around you, and if you don't have a good relationship with the people you work with and rely on them there's going to be no success anywhere, " Deighan said.

Deighan was the first in his family to attend college. He said he has a passion for teaching and he couldn't see himself doing anything but working in education.

He plans to be in Lawton over the next few months as much as possible. He will start full time June 1st. At that time he'll work closely with Beauchamp until his last day on June 28th.
