United Way announces funding allocations

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - The United Way announced Tuesday which community programs will be receiving funding next year.

Forty programs in the Amarillo and Canyon areas will be receiving funding for the 2013 fiscal year. That funding is thanks to the community's record high donations from the United Way's 2012 campaign. Last year's campaign brought in $6 million.

The community impact council looks to fund programs that best meet the needs of our community. Those needs are broken down into impacting issues like education, income, and health.

The Maverick Boys and Girls Club will be receiving more than $160,000, which they say is crucial to their program.

"The 160,000 that we're getting from United Way this next year, you know it helps us to provide programs for our kids. We have about 702 members that are unduplicated clients that come to the club, that come at different times of course, but without that funding we wouldn't to provide those programs for the kids," Kimber Daniel, Maverick Boys and Girls Club Executive Director and President says.

Daniel says without the Maverick Club many of the kids there would not have a safe place to go after school. The Maverick Club has been sponsored by The United Way for more than 30 years.
