More DNA testing granted in Hank Skinner murder case

Posted: Updated:

Pampa, TX - There are new developments in the case involving a death row inmate and convicted murderer from our area.

More DNA testing will be conducted and used as evidence in the high-profile murder case of Hank Skinner.

Prosecutors in the Texas Attorney General's Office and defense lawyers for Skinner signed the agreement just this week.

Skinner was originally charged with slaying his then girlfriend, Twila Busby, and her two sons in Pampa back in 1993.

DNA testing will be now done on samples of carpet from the crime scene, hair found on one of the victims' hands and blood from Skinner and two of the murder victims.

Testing in Skinner's case was first approved last Summer, coming after nearly ten years of being rejected by the State of Texas.

The first round of testing conducted in October 2012 did not produce DNA that bolstered Skinner's innocence claims.

State lawyers say those results, including blood found on the handle of a knife from the crime scene, further implicated Skinner.

Defense lawyers say those results are incomplete.

A second round of DNA testing was completed in February 2013.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers continue to have differing views on those results.

Prosecutors in the Attorney General's Office say the tests "produced no favorable evidence" that would justify or excuse the defendant of guilt.

Skinner has argued that investigators should have looked at Busby's uncle, Robert Donnell, who has since died.

Donnell reportedly had a history of violence, and witnesses say he was making advances toward Busby shortly before the murder.

Testing has still not been done on a man's jacket found at the scene that matched the description of one that witnesses say Donnell often wore.

That item continues to remain missing.

Skinner's defense lawyer says the jacket is a critical piece of evidence that must be found.
