Texas - The process for obtaining a concealed handgun license in Texas could soon change.
A proposed bill would shorten the length time of classroom instruction in half, allowing you to obtain a license with as little as four hours of classroom instruction.
Currently, you are required to take 10 to 15 hours and that does not include range instruction.
Supporters of the measure say the current course length is too long and usually leaves instructors looking for ways to fill time.
They also say it is causing thousands of residents to look to other states to obtain a license either online or by mail.
Although the bill would shorten class time, the same information would still be covered; including dispute resolution, gun safety, proper storage and applicants would still have to pass a shooting test.
The bill won unanimous approval from the Senate Criminal Justice Committee and now heads to a full Senate.
If passed, it would also give the Texas Department of Public Safety authority to set up online classroom courses for current concealed handgun license holders who are seeking to renew their licenses.
The Senate is plunging into full-fledged debate on the Republican effort to demolish the Obama health care law.
