J Roy Dunning Children's Shelter Celebrates 50 years of Service

Posted: Updated:

Lawton,Okla_ A local children's shelter celebrates 50 years of protecting abused and neglected kids. The J. Roy Dunning Children's Shelter has served as a safe, temporary home for over 30,000 children since 1962.

They celebrated this feat with a benefit at Cameron University Friday night.  According to the shelter's director, 5,000 Oklahoma kids were removed from their homes within the last year.1,000 of those were from right here in Comanche County. So, there is a great need for their services.

J. Roy Dunning Executive Director Hope Porche said "I want to make sure the children are safe, I want to make sure they have everything they need, all their basic needs are met, and also that we are able to embrace them some of the love and nurturing that they may not have at home."

All of the money raised from Friday's dinner and auction will go to the shelters mission of  helping children in Comanche County.
