Amarillo volunteers clean up for Texas 'Trash-Off'

Posted: Updated:

Several volunteer groups took advantage of the nice weather Saturday and spent part of their day picking up trash along the sides of several highways in Amarillo as a part of the annual Don't Mess With Texas Trash Off.

Saturday was the 27th annual Trash Off in Texas and is a partnership between Keep Texas Beautiful and the Texas Department of Transportation. TxDOT spends about $47.5 million statewide on contracted litter control, which is why volunteer trash pick up's, like Saturday's, are so helpful.

"Thanks to our Adopt-A-Highway volunteers, we can hold back on the costs and they go out there and enjoy it and give a little bit back to our community," said TxDOT Spokesperson Paul Braun. "We're very appreciative of it."

"It's nice to come out here to the community and it helps everybody enjoy their ride past and through Amarillo," added one clean up volunteer from the Tascosa ROTC, Justin Wright. "It keeps the highways clean and it gives us something to do on the weekends."

The trash off is Texas' largest single day litter cleanup event. Last year, more than 80,000 volunteers helped clean up some 7 million pounds of trash across the state.
