Union Workers Rally In Support Of Pipeline Project

Posted: Updated:

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Hundreds of union workers turned out Tuesday at a rally supporting a regional pipeline construction project that its members say would create thousands of jobs and improve the local economies of cities along the line's route.

The rally backing the Keystone XL Pipeline took place at the Tulsa headquarters of the Pipeliners Local 798. The union claims more than 6,500 members across the country.

The Keystone XL Pipeline would transport oil from tar sands in Canada to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast.

But the project has drawn strong opposition from environmental groups like the Sierra Club, which says the 1,700-mile line is a natural disaster waiting to happen. The club says that if a section were to leak it would threaten the drinking water supply for millions of Americans.
