Wind industry in Texas remains top in nation

Posted: Updated:

Texas - The wind industry in Texas continues to increase its lead against the rest of the nation.

A new report shows wind companies in Texas installed the most turbine power than any other state in 2012.

The American Wind Energy Association says Texas is part of a nationwide boom, partly because of the near expiration of the federal tax credit program for wind energy.

That pushed developers to start construction faster than they might have planned to qualify for the subsidy.

A lot of projects that were set for 2013 or 2014 were pulled into 2012.

Texas has six of the nation's largest wind farms.

The largest installation is the Roscoe Wind Farm about 50 miles west of Abilene.

Adding to this boom will be a new development by Tri Global Energy, they are planning to put four large wind farms in Hale County.

They have leased nearly 130,000 acres, where they expect to place anywhere from 850 to 900 wind turbines.

The wind association estimates there are more than 10,000 wind related jobs in Texas, which is also the highest in the nation.
