TxDOT promoting work zone safety

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - TxDOT is looking for your help to reduce fatalities in highway work zones.

There were more than 16,000 crashes in work zones across Texas last year. 134 of those resulted in deaths, and four of those fatalities were right here in the Amarillo area.

As part of National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, TxDOT is hoping to educate drivers how to be safe while driving through these zones. But it isn't just for highway workers' safety, it's for those behind the wheel.

City of Amarillo officials say they hope the city's recent cell phone ordinance will help eliminate distracted driving in these zones.

"...to eliminate four. I think having one death in a work zone is unacceptable, and that's what we really need to strive for is to make sure that that doesn't happen. I think that trying to eliminate distracted driving out there is the way to do that," Mark Read, City of Amarillo Engineer says.

TxDOT reports more than four out of five deaths in work zones nationwide are motorist, not workers.

TxDOT adds this year rumble strips will be placed before work zones to better alert drivers to changing conditions.
