Texting and driving changes in Texas

A possible new state law may bring more changes to Amarillo's texting and driving ordnance.

Wednesday afternoon, the House passed a bill named in honor of Alex Brown, a West Texas teen who died in 2010 while texting and driving.

If passed by the Senate, the new law may create a statewide ban for texting and driving. But, unlike the Amarillo ordinance, the possible new law would allow you to talk on the phone without the use of a hands-free device.

Texas is one of 10 states without a law against texting and driving but 23 cities, including Amarillo have bans against it.

If the senate approves this bill, a proposed amendment would end all local ordinances and the statewide law would only prohibit drivers from sending or reading text messages and emails while in the car. Drivers who are caught behind the wheel texting and driving may also face a one hundred dollar fine starting September first.
