Amarillo group shines light on preventing child abuse/neglect

Posted: Updated:

Every eleven seconds, a U.S. child is reported abused or neglected.

To help lower that statistic, citizens, caregivers and daycare providers in Amarillo were invited to attend a child abuse recognition and prevention program Saturday. The program, presented by the Prevent Child Abuse Texas was hosted at First Christian Church in Amarillo. There, organizers taught ways recognize the different types of abuse such as physical, sexual, emotional or neglect.

Participants also learned how to document child abuse and how and when to report it. Because more than 90 percent of abused children are abused by their own family members, organizers say it's even more important to receive this training and education.

"We, in this area have one of the highest rates of child abuse in the state of Texas, and Texas within the United States," said TPC Family Partner and Prevention Specialist Janice James. "It's okay to talk about it, it's important to talk about it."

April has been recognized as National Child Abuse Prevention month since it was first declared in a presidential proclamation back in 1983.
