BBB helps citizens protect identity with 'Shred It' event

Posted: Updated:

With more than 370,000 identity theft claims reported in the United States in 2011, it's the single largest category of complaints. That's why the Better Business Bureau is encouraging citizens to 'Shred It' to protect it.

Saturday, the Amarillo BBB branch along with Amarillo Police hosted their annual "Shred It Day" at Westgate Mall. There, they offered free shredding of personal paper documents to help eliminate personal identifying information and prevent identity theft and fraud.

"It keeps important documents with social security numbers and account numbers out of the trash bin and we bring it here and shred it securely. So it helps to curve the risk of identity theft for individuals."

Saturday's "Shred It" event is hosted by BBB groups across the nation. The crime of identity theft accounts for millions of dollars in losses to individuals and businesses each year.
