Okla. Groups Rally For 'Reproductive Justice'

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Members of the Oklahoma Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, ACLU of Oklahoma and other advocacy groups in the state say the Legislature must change its tune on sexual education, abortion and reproductive health care.

Dozens of women and men, many in matching hot pink shirts, gathered in the state Capitol Monday in a rally for what they dubbed "reproductive justice." Sen. Constance Johnson and Rep. Jeannie McDaniel, both Democrats, also attended.

The groups say Oklahoma ranks 1st in female incarceration and 5th in teen pregnancy in the country, yet the Legislature hasn't acted to fix either problem. Sex education isn't required in Oklahoma, and parents can pull their students out of such classes.

The legislature is considering several abortion-related bills that make abortions more challenging for minors and in non-emergencies.
