Cinnamon challenge causing more injuries

Posted: Updated:

Doctors are warning about the dangers of the cinnamon challenge.

Poison control centers across the country are seeing the number of calls regarding the trend among teens skyrocket.

A report just released by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows alarming statistics.

In 2011 poison control received 51 calls and that number increased dramatically to 222 in 2012.

Many teens who try to swallow a spoonful of cinnamon without water end up choking, having throat irritation or breathing trouble and in more severe cases can be hospitalized for collapsed lungs.

In 2012 at least 30 youth in the U.S. needed medical attention.

We first brought you this story last year, when we first discovered teens in our area were trying the cinnamon challenge.

Now its getting the attention of millions of teens and young adults across the nation due to the Internet.

There were more than 50,000 YouTube videos depicting youth attempting the cinnamon challenge as of August 2012.

Teens with asthma, allergies or other respiratory conditions are more likely to have shortness of breath and trouble breathing if they try the cinnamon challenge.
