Bloomberg: Boston Bombing Suspects Planned to Hit NYC

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK, NY_ New York's mayor said the Boston Marathon suspects had plans to attack his city next.

Michael Bloomberg held a news conference Thursday with NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. Bloomberg said the FBI made them aware Wednesday after talking with the surviving suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

"He told the FBI apparently that he and his brother had intended to drive to New York and detonate additional explosives in Times Square," Bloomberg said. "They had built these additional explosives, and we know they had the capacity to carry out the attacks. If, God forbid, they had arrived in New York City and gone to Times Square, one thing for sure, they would have seen an enormous police presence, but they would not have seen the extensive network of cameras that are part of our security initiative, which would have helped police identify suspicious movements such as packages left unattended on the streets."

The police commissioner said the Tsarnaevs had five pipe bombs and a "pressure-cooker bomb" with them in the SUV they stole in Massachusetts.
