Altus Woman in Hospital After Boyfriend Set Her on Fire

Posted: Updated:

ALTUS Okla_ 7News is continuing coverage on the woman in Altus who said her boyfriend set her on fire. Altus police say she remains in an Oklahoma City hospital Monday night.

Police say it happened at a home near South Chalmers and East Walnut Street around 11:00PM Friday. Authorities say they were called there by a neighbor, who said the woman showed up on their doorstep and appeared to be frantic.

Authorities say when they arrived, the woman told them her boyfriend set her on fire after becoming upset she could not operate a DVD player.

Altus Assistant Police Chief Mike Bell said authorities talked with the boyfriend Monday afternoon. He is not sharing what was said in the meeting but said police have not arrested him, because they're still trying to determine if things happened the way the woman claims they did.

"It's horrible," Bell said. I don't know the situation, which side is right or wrong on this. I don't know the story."

Jason Washborn lives across the street from where the woman was set on fire. He's shocked to hear what happened to his 24-year-old neighbor.

"Anytime I have ever seen her, she's been really nice and friendly," Washborn said. "I never had any problems with her. So, I was always happy to talk to her."

According to Bell, the woman claims her boyfriend was frustrated she could not operate a DVD player. So, he threw an open bottle of rubbing alcohol at her, lit a match and tossed it at her, setting her on fire.

Bell said when he heard what happened, it left him speechless.

"I was flabbergasted," Bell said. "It upset me, because anybody that would do this to anybody else, you begin to wonder what is going through their head."

Bell said after the altercation, the woman ran from her home her to her neighbor's house behind her and called for help.  He said once emergency crews arrived, they saw she had been burnt from the bottom of her chin to the mid-chest area.

Bell said in his years on the job, he's worked several cases of people purposely setting someone on fire. He said it's a senseless act.

"I don't understand how this is going to solve your problem, when you burn somebody else like this," Bell said. "I really don't. I don't get it."

Assistant Chief Bell said if the boyfriend is arrested, he will be charged with first degree arson.
