Feeding hungry students in the summer

Posted: Updated:

Over 22,000 children within the AISD qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. With the summer vacation quickly approaching, nearly 15,000 students in the Amarillo School District will be forced to find food.

In order to help combat the growing number of students who are looking for food, the AISD, Maverick Boys and Girls Club and the Parks and Rec Department are teaming up to make sure no child goes hungry.

Snack-Pak-4-Kids will be supplying snacks for area children during the weekend, while the Boys and Girls Club and Parks and Rec will have options for lunches during the week.

Currently 67 percent of AISD students qualify for free and reduced lunch which means many of them will be looking for food in the coming months.

Dyron Howell, founder of Snack-Pak-4-Kids says the increased number of students who qualify may be due to more hunger awareness rather than a problem within the community.
