National Day of Prayer at Lawton City Hall

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ Worshippers from all backgrounds made their way to Lawton's New City Hall Thursday to join in the National Day of Prayer.

There was singing, music, short sermons, and times for personal prayer and reflection. It was an opportunity for the community to come together overlooking their differences to unite in the power of prayer.

Thursday marked the 62nd year of the National Day of Prayer, and strong winds and a little rain did not stop people from coming together to experience the power of prayer and worship. They began this morning and will continue throughout the evening. Prayer warriors from all walks of life and denominations joined hands to pray for our nation and honor the power of prayer.

Lawton Mayor Fred Fitch said the day is important not only for Lawton, but for the nation.

"With all the times and turmoil and all the things that are going on, not only in our town but in our state, our country, and all over the world, it is a time that we can all come together and thank God for what we have," Fitch said.

People came out Thursday for that reason: to worship through song, dance, and times of personal reflection, overlooking differences in faith and beliefs, because they believe in the power of prayer to unite, heal, and provide hope.

"I think that a day like this shows unity in the community," Fitch said. "I think that it causes people to bond together and to see that we have a common cause here, no matter what denomination we are and no matter what race we are. We can bind together in one common cause, prayer, to lift up our city and our nation."

The Lawton/Fort Sill National Day of Prayer continues until 8:00 PM Thursday.
