Altus Couple Charged with Child Abuse

Posted: Updated:

ALTUS, Okla_ An Altus couple is behind bars after being charged with abusing their own child.

Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy said the Jackson County D.A.'s office has filed charges against 22-year-old Karen L. Lewis and 24-year-old Philip A. Lewis. Karen is charged with enabling child abuse and Philip is accused of child abuse. Their child, who is now 2 years old, had suffered several fractures to the ribs and legs along with a skull
fracture when it was approximately 2 months old.

Police initially began their investigation in January 2011. The child was taken to Jackson County Memorial Hospital with a head injury and later transported to Children's Hospital in OKC. X-Rays showed the child had, over time, sustained fractures to the ribs and legs along with a skull fracture. Oklahoma
Department of Human Services removed the child from the home and into foster
care, where the child remains today.

The Lewis's have denied causing any injuries to their child.
