Barry Beauchamp's retirement celebration

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON,Okla_A retirement celebration was held in Lawton tonight in honor of Barry Beauchamp.  He's stepping down as superintendent of Lawton public schools, effective next month.

Students, teachers and community leaders gathered at City Hall to honor Beauchamp's legacy.
His career with the district started 39 years ago. But his connection to it goes back even further than that because he graduated from Lawton Public Schools. That's why he says celebrating his retirement is surreal.

"Out of the last 55 years, 51 of them have in some way been connected to LPS, so it's a big part of my life," said Beauchamp.

When asked what he will miss most about his job, he had this to say.

"The kids, simple. The kids are obviously why we do what we do and all of the wonderful people you get to work with."

Beauchamp's last day is June 28th.  In the meantime, he will continue to work closely with incoming superintendent, Dr. Tom Deighan.

Beauchamp says the most important advice for his successor is to always do what's right for the kids.
