CSCOPE will no longer provide lesson plans to Texas teachers

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Texas teachers are re-evaluating their own methods after a widely-used but highly-contested resource is discontinued.

CSCOPE Is a statewide system for educators that offers schools the technical infrastructure for electronic books along with optional lesson plans that comply with state-mandated curricula. And earlier today, CSCOPE'S Board of directors announced their decision to stop creating those lesson plans.

CSCOPE has been in use since 2006, and is currently used by 70 percent of Texas schools. But after the system caught some flak from parents concerned about content and transparency, example lesson plans will no longer be included - which could create a headache for smaller school districts, who don't have the staff to create their own lesson plans.

"It's always been nice to be able to go pull up a lesson, and get an idea of what your instruction should look like," says Angie Watson, the curriculum director at Bushland ISD. "Now that we aren't going to have those lessons, we're going to have to find other resources to do that with."

Amarillo ISD is the only local district that doesn't use CSCOPE, but also has the largest staff, so they can more easily create their own lesson plans.

CSCOPE will still provide the infrastructure, but lessons will cease on August 31st.
