Reaching out to tornado victims in Moore

Posted: Updated:

People in our area with families in Moore are sharing their stories.

Jerry Ray of Amarillo says, "I got a text this morning from my sister-in-law saying that it was a long night. There was a lot of sirens and helicopters... Yesterday when the storm hit. They couldn't find my brother for a while. But I guess she said they found him. He's OK. And that, I don't know if he has a place to work now."

Ray's brother and sister-in-law in Moore were able to survive the disaster. He says, "It missed their house by a quarter to a half of a mile. It's what they said. They have no power (Jessica- 'So they're home right now safe?') Yea."

Amarillo's Cornerstone Outreach Center Director Joe Kirkwood says he's friends with a pastor in Moore. He says, "I was on the phone with him as the tornado was passing over head praying with him and encouraging him. They've survived, and the teacher that was at the school that we thought was dead last night, she survived."

They're collecting donations tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to take to their sister church/ outreach center in Moore Thursday morning. Kirkwood says, "That building is still intact. Everything around it is gone. But that building is still intact. We will be hauling the supplies there, distributing from that location."

Amarillo Resident Melissa Priest says, "We brought clothes. I had extra sets of sheets, towels, bedding. There's some dishes... We know what it's like. My house burned when I was a freshman. So I know what it's like not to have anything."

Victims need containers, non-perishable foods, baby formula, generators, chainsaws, tents, diapers and water. You can take them to the Cornerstone Outreach Center located at 1111 N. Buchanan in Amarillo.
