Coca Cola move to help downtown projects

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - Coca Cola is out and the downtown revitalization project is in after an agreement has been reached.

The Coca Cola building that has been here since 1906 will soon become the site of Amarillo's new ballpark. City commissioners approved a contract Tuesday that will relocate this distribution center out of the downtown area.

Amarillo EDC will contract with Southwest General Contractors to expand and renovate the former Zarges building in the CenterPort business park near highway 60 and the north loop. The contract gives $3.9 million for the project and a seven month time frame for construction.

Not only will Coca Cola have updated facilities, but the city will finally be able to move forward with downtown projects.

"Everybody knew they had to go. And it worked for them because their facility was very old, and it worked for us. So really it was a perfect kind of public private partnership," Brian Eades, City Commissioner Place 2 says.

Eades says downtown development will help Amarillo become a vibrant progressive community attracting businesses and adding jobs.

As soon as renovation plans are finalized, construction on the new Coke facility is set to begin.
