Last area fallen soldier remembered

Amarillo, Texas - More than 800 people gathered to remember area fallen soldiers.

American soldiers were described as every day people. Your brother or sister, your high school friend, your neighbor. But today is a day to ensure these heroes will not be forgotten.

Men and women from all branches of the military were remembered as stories of notable panhandle soldiers who died in action were shared. More than 800 people gathered at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial.

"All the individuals who have served or are severing in the united states armed forced to please rise for a moment," Andrew Welch, Thomas E. Creek VA Hospital director says.

Many in attendance were veterans themselves.

Although today is a day of remembrance, one family honors their most recent lost. Army Specialist Genaro Bedoy was killed in action in Afghanistan in September. He is the last fallen soldier from the panhandle. This memorial day, his family remembers him.

"Mi corazon es igual que el principio," Veronica Bedoy, fallen soldier's mother says.

Bedoy's mother says her heart is still broken.

"It just feels the same. It's our same pain every day. We love that the community has that support and gives him that honor. That means a lot," Paty Bedoy, fallen soldier's wife says.

Over the weekend Governor Perry signed a house concurrent resolution in memory of U.S.. Private First Class Genaro Bedoy of Amarillo. A copy of the resolution will be sent to the Bedoy family.
