United Way Agencies Won't Get Much Help This Year

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ Some 19 non-profit agencies under the United Way of Lawton/Fort Sill umbrella now know just how much financial help they'll get this year, and it won't be as much as last year.

70 volunteers made the hard choices on who gets how much. It's harder this year, because the campaign goal of $1.825M fell about $100,000 short.

"For many of the agencies, we're their chief fund raiser," Katie Noffsker of United Way of Lawton/Fort Sill said. "They get more money from the United Way than any other source. In fact, we have a couple agencies where we're their sole source of funding."

Noffsker said they knew it was going to be a tough campaign year because of all the layoffs in the area. She said that's a double-edged sword, because as a result, while less money came in, more people needed help.

The encouraging news is the campaign brought in $200,000 in new donors.
