Fake honey on store shelves

To help fight allergies, many people turn to honey as a natural alternative. But one group's findings say not all honey will benefit your symptoms.

An investigation by the Food Safety News shows nearly 75% of the honey in grocery stores isn't real. According to the investigation, most of the honey is watered down with high fructose corn syrup and the pollen is filtered out.

Tim Cunningham is a registered and licensed dietitian. "The idea is if the pollen is found still in the honey, then it's going to help with allergic symptoms," he said. "Obviously, if it's not in the honey, you're not going to get it that way either."

For those who use honey to help treat allergies, the processed kind is missing a key ingredient. He told us honey that is local and has a US Grade A rating is less likely to be filtered.

"If you're buying cheap honey, you don't know if it's going to be watered down or not watered down," Cunningham said.

We spoke with, Constintine Saadah, a local allergist about the benefits of using local honey to treat allergies. He told us using it isn't as beneficial as once believed. "We do not recommend it as a specific treatment for allergies. It's not going to hurt. If it helps, it helps," he said. "But practically speaking, you should be treated for allergies differently than just taking local honey."
