24 Hours in the Canyon to benefit new program at HCC

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - You can enjoy a day in the sun at Palo Duro Canyon while helping cancer survivors in our area this weekend (June 1-2).

For the last several years, cyclists from all over have been riding into Palo Duro Canyon to compete in the "24 Hours in the Canyon" event.  The event is the primary fundraiser for the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center Amarillo.  And this year, the proceeds will go toward a brand-new program meant to make the road to recovery a little less rocky.

The Survivorship Program will give recovering cancer patients the support they need to make the transition back to normalcy after treatment has ended.  Patients will have support from dietitians, physical therapists, and even counselors and smoking cessation specialists - all at no cost to them.

"We know that patients are going to have those immediate treatment-related side effects," says Vietta Newton, Manager of Nursing Services at the Harrington Cancer Center, "but we also know that there's going to be some long-term effects from treatment, and so we need to have that available to them."

All the proceeds raised in this year's event will go toward starting up the new program.

Although registration for competitive entries has already ended, you can still sign up to participate or donate directly to the cancer center by following the links attached to this story.
