Students to fight tobacco use

Amarillo, Texas - Friday was World No Tobacco Day and the 3.3 million Texans who smoke are being urged to quit.

172 people in Potter and Randall counties will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year alone. Studies show 80 percent of smokers began before the age of 18. Impact futures is hoping to bring those numbers down by reaching out to teens. But it won't be the staff at impact futures educating students. Area teens will be the ones teaching their peers about the effects and prevention of tobacco use. A student led coalition will form this summer.

"It's hard to relate to the pressures kids have nowadays. I mean I think that's probably the biggest struggle. So for us, we just wanted to make sure that we spend every bit of money that we have in the most effective way. So reaching a kid, if it's more effective to use a trained kid, that's what you need to do," LaViza Matthews, Impact Futures Project Director says.

Funding for the student coalition will come from the Say What program which offers five 500 dollar grants for the students use.

You can reach Impact futures at (806) 350-7623 for more information on the student coalition or online at http://impactfutures.org/Welcome.html
