Common antibacterial soap ingredient causing concern

Posted: Updated:

The Food and Drug Administration is looking into the safety of, Triclosan, an ingredient commonly found in antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers.

Some doctors are speculating that the ingredient may be causing more harm than good. Doctor Meganne Walsh, in Amarillo says there is a potential for creating superbugs, if antibacterial products are overused.

"I'm concerned about, are we creating superbugs, super infections by exposing our secret weapons to the viruses and the bacteria," Walsh said. "It's going to kill off the bacteria that it kills, so that the bacteria that is left on my hands are resistant."

The FDA continues to look into this product, but at this time, they say it is still safe to use in moderation. Triclosan is often found in clean products along with antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers.
