Double Murder Trial Begins

Posted: Updated:

Lawton, Ok_After four years and numerous delays, jury selection in the murder trial of an Indiahoma man is underway.

Mica Martinez is charged in the brutal murders of a Carl and Martha Miller near Cache. He's accused of beating the couple to death during a home invasion in 2009. He is also charged with assault and battery in the attack of the couple's son, who survived.

The crime happened at the couple's home on highway 115 and Woodlawn. Authorities say it started when the Millers called 911 to report that someone had parked a car about 75-yards from their house and was shooting a rifle.

When authorities arrived, they found 55 year-old Martha Miller beaten to death and her 64-year old husband Carl, badly beaten. He died three days later in a hospital.

Authorities say the couple's son happened to be staying the night and was awakened by the attacks. He fought Martinez and was badly beaten but authorities credit him with helping them catch Martinez.

Potential jurors were told by prosecutors that Martinez murdered the couple maliciously. However, the defense countered by saying Martinez is guilty of a crime but that he did not intend to murder the Millers.

If convicted, Martinez faces the death penalty.
