Car buyers beware

Posted: Updated:

Local body shops are asking you to be careful when buying a discounted car after the recent storm.

Jimmy Fincher Body Shop says some dealers are not informing people right. The owner says, "Sometimes they'll tell them they've got $2,000 worth of damage, but in reality most of these cars have about $6,000.. Some of these cars got hailed on for 30 minutes, and it's got just so many hail dents that there's no way to fix them. Just got to replace the hood, deck lid, and roofs on most of them."

Street Toyota in Amarillo says you have to take extra precautions when buying a hail damaged car. General Manager Mike Good says, "If there's dirt on the car, it's hard to see hail dents. And if it's damp at all or wet, it's very difficult to see hail dents."

Good says you should have your car inspected by a professional appraiser or mechanic. He says, "What you don't want to do is end up buying a car with glass, wind or that kind of damage on the windshield. And be driving into the sun late one evening, and see the little minute chips and prisms."

Good recommends you get an estimate from an insurance company and repair your car locally. He says, "There are lots of companies that are fly by night that come through town. And they're here just for a few days and will offer to repair your car for little or nothing."

Some local body shops are expecting to work on storm damaged cars for about a year.
