Recent rain creates potential threat of increased mosquitoes

The Amarillo Environmental Health Department is predicting an increase in area mosquitoes. Officials say the recent rains have created an ideal breeding ground for the insect.

"From the time the egg is laid in standing water or mud and it rains, it's about three to five days before we have an adult hatching mosquito," said Deree Duke, the Director of the Environmental Health Department.

"It's always important to protect yourself because you can't tell what mosquitoes are carrying a virus," she added. But, Duke agrees that now is the perfect time to start protecting yourself because adult mosquitoes have been seen in the Amarillo area.

She suggests getting rid of standing water around your house. "Any container can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes," she said. "If everybody will check it and eliminate the standing water on their property, everybody will be better off and there will be fewer adult mosquitoes."

There have been no reports of the West Nile virus in the area but Duke says it's usually around August and September that cases are reported. With preventative measures, she is hopeful the amount of cases will be low this summer.
