Dogie Days raises thousands of dollars for area organizations

Dumas, Texas - Tens of thousand of dollars is expected to be raised this year for organizations in Moore County.

Dogie Days has been a tradition in Dumas for 67 years. The celebration that's put on by the Dumas Noon Lions Club includes a carnival, food booths, parade and town barbecue. But the event does more than just bring residents together.

Nearly $90,000 is expected to be raised this year from the four day event.vLions Club President, Milton Pax says the amount of money raised increases every year. That money goes to benefit 40 different organizations in Dumas and Moore county.

"Well we do it by working together. Like I said earlier, we have around 250 lions and every one of them is out here participating. It takes every one of us to make it work, and because of that we can raise that money," Pax says.

The Dumas Noon Lions Club is the 10th largest club in the world. Many area organizations wouldn't be able to operate without the funds this club raises.

The carnival runs through Saturday night along with a parade Saturday morning at McDade Park in Dumas.

    Several students graduated from Junior Citizens Police Academy today. Each year they host two of these academies to teach local kids exactly what officers do. The academy is designed to help the department build a better relationship with the community.

    A luncheon was held today for those who go above and beyond to donate to the United Way of Southwest Oklahoma. The 2017 Pacesetters Luncheon recognizes local businesses and organization for their commitment to bettering the community by getting a jump start on donations for United Way's campaign. A total of 19 businesses has already pledged donations this year which is an increase from year's past.
