Early Juneteenth celebration brings Amarillo community together

Posted: Updated:

Members of the Amarillo community came together to celebrate as well as reflect and remember a day in history that changed Texas and our nation forever.

Saturday afternoon, locals filled Bones Hook Park for the annual Juneteenth celebration. The celebration, typically recognized on the 19th of June, commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the State of Texas in 1865.

"We are here today to celebrate freedom, freedom has no color, freedom has no gender," explained Project Chairman Keith Grays. "Freedom is the ability to do the right things and be allowed to make those choices."

State representative Four Price was also at Saturday's Juneteenth celebration presenting awards like the "Citizen of the Year" award.
