Gruver officials meet to discuss disbanding city police

Posted: Updated:

Gruver, Texas - Gruver City Commissioners met Wednesday evening to discuss disbanding the town's police department.

We first told you, back on June 14th Gruver Mayor Buster Davis added an item to the commission agenda to discuss contracting the city's law enforcement with the Hansford County Sheriff's Department. That agenda item has caused a stir in the town of more than 1,100 people.

Davis has stated outsourcing the city's law enforcement is being considered due to financial reasons.

"Rather surprising. Glad everybody turned out. Glad to hear the opinions of both sides. We were just merely trying to see if we can find ways that we can save the city money. Glad to hear from both sides of the issue, and hopefully we can come to a well informed decision," John Holland, city commissioner says.

More than 200 people showed up to support each side. City commissioners said they usually have three people in attendance.

NewsChannel 10 will continue to bring you more from Gruver city officials on what they believe will be the future of the city's police department.
