Crews, residents deal with aftermath of strong winds

Amarillo, TX - Last night's (Jun. 20) storms just barely skirted most of Amarillo, but the winds did their fair share of damage - and the southwest part of town took the brunt of it.

At some points last night, the wind reached 60 miles an hour, which was enough to uproot trees and down power lines.  And while we're not aware of any reported injuries, crews and residents were cleaning up the aftermath.

People in those neighborhoods were out dealing with downed fences, toppled trees, and scattered branches. And thousands of people were without power last night after the winds damaged 22 transmission structures, which Xcel crews were working to repair.

By 3:00 Friday (Jun. 21), Xcel Spokesman Wes Reeves told us only a few customers were still without power.

Traffic on I-40 was also at a standstill for some time last night as people waited for the storm to pass.
