Child poverty rate increases in Texas

Posted: Updated:

Texas has improved when it comes to health and well-being among children but there are still problems the state is struggling to overcome.

The poverty rate is one of the biggest problems the state faces.

It has increased over the past year and approximately 26.2 percent of Texas children are currently living in poverty.

To give you a better idea, that's more than one-in four children.

Data shows chronic stress brought on by poverty and food instability does long-term damage to children's concentration and memory.

The study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation shows Texas children are indeed doing better than they were a few years before.

For example, in the health care category, fewer Texas kids are uninsured and our child and teen death rates have declined significantly.

In the education category, more young kids are attending preschool and more 8th graders are proficient in math.
