Obama to Meet Mandela's Family

Posted: Updated:

PRETORIA, South Africa_President Obama won't be visiting ailing former South African leader Nelson Mandela this weekend while in South Africa, instead he and the First Lady will meet with Mandela's relatives.

On Saturday, current South African Leader Jacob Zuma and his wife greeted the President and First Lady Michelle Obama during an arrival ceremony in Pretoria. The focus of the visit is to bolster US investment opportunities, address issues such as food safety and health as well as promote democracy. It comes as China is pouring billions of dollars in a quest to replace the US as Africa's largest trading partner.

Tomorrow, President Obama is scheduled to stop by the site where Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his opposition to the South African Apartheid government.

The 94-year-old Mandela remains in critical condition with a recurring lung infection.

President Obama's three-nation African visit started in Senegal and will end in Tanzania next week.
