Guidelines change to bring down antibiotic use

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - Antibiotics are often unnecessarily prescribed, especially to children. The American Academy of Pediatrics is now urging parents to wait a few days longer before bringing in children to be treated for sinus infections. A goal of the guidelines is to reduce unnecessary prescriptions of antibiotics.

Local doctors we spoke with tell us often times upper respiratory symptoms are just viral illnesses. Only six to seven percent of kids with symptoms actually have bacterial sinusitis, better known as a sinus infection, which needs to be treated with antibiotics. The overuse of antibiotics can lead to more harm than good in the body.

"Over use of antibiotics though we know has led to resistance in bacteria. So we need to avoid the over use of antibiotics anytime possible. As well, antibiotics always have potential side effects. So, anytime that the body would fight it off on it's own, it's important to let it do that," Amanda Griffin, M.D., Texas Tech Pediatrics says.

Pharmacists say taking unnecessary antibiotics can cause a person to become more sick by killing not only bad bacteria in the body, but also good bacteria.
