Dozens of fireworks violations

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo Police say they've already received dozens of calls on fireworks violations, and they're expecting more as the July 4th holiday nears.

They department has had close to 100 calls on fireworks violations so far, and they expect more before, during and after the holiday as some people celebrate into the weekend. Around this time last year, police say they had around 150 calls.

More than 60 citations were issued for fireworks violations including possessing and discharging. In 2011, they only had about 20. But police say that's because the city had a big ban in place due to the drought. That year, they arrested two people for "Violation of City Ordinance" because of the "Emergency Declaration".

Amarillo Police Department Corporal Jerry Neufeld says, "It can be an affirmative defense if that person is in possession of fireworks, and they're in their trunk. And that package has not been open. So you can see a little bit of a legal wonder there. But for the most part, if they're in the passenger compartment, and they've been open. And it's no longer in that big package or something like that, then we will confiscate them. And we will more than likely issue those citations."

On the Fourth, Amarillo Police say some officers will be specifically assigned to make sure people are not in possession of or shooting fireworks within city limits. Those found in violation, may face a fine of up to $2,000.
