TxDOT expands Amarillo roads, city expands utilities

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Amarillo is a hub city, with two interstate highways running through it - and as the volume of traffic grows, the infrastructure has to accommodate it.

So now the Department of Transportation and the city are upgrading a key section of Loop 335 to ease the flow of traffic south of Amarillo and through downtown.

Over the next two years, TxDOT will be expanding and upgrading Hollywood Road from I-27 to Georgia Street.  The plan is to build overpasses on Bell, Western, and Georgia streets to keep the loop nonstop for through traffic while keeping residents and students safer.  The entire project should cost about $40 million and construction is slated to start next spring.  But before roadwork can begin in earnest, the city has to expand and reconfigure water and sewer lines in that area to make way for phase one of the project.

So under the terms of the current resolution, TxDOT will pay for 80 percent of the cost of doing so, leaving the city responsible for about $26,000 of the total expense, which will come out of the capital improvements budget.

TxDOT has dozens of other projects planned or currently underway in our area - if you'd like to see what's in the works, follow the link attached to this story.
