Many area residents fishing without license

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - The 532 game wardens across Texas monitor around 3 million people who hunt and fish every year.

In the Texas Panhandle they are seeing many residents fishing without their license.

When you turn 17, you must have a fishing license in order to fish legally in public waters.

The only exception is when you are fishing within a Texas State Park.

In Texas, getting caught fishing or hunting without a license puts a person at risk of a criminal fine of as much as $500.

Then there's the civil restitution for any fish or game taken while fishing or hunting without a license.

That fine can run into the hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Recently near Spearman, two game wardens patrolling a remote section of Palo Duro Lake spotted nine people from Oklahoma who were fishing illegally.

The game wardens then documented the fish in their possession, and released them back into the lake.

You can purchase a fishing or hunting license by going to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Money collected goes toward conservation efforts across the state.
