Lawton Shooting Possibly Connected to Homicide

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ New details are emerging from Tuesday night's shooting in Lawton that left one man wounded near 34th and Northwest Lincoln.

The victim, Prentice Scruggs, is the grandfather of Lavonte Jackson, who was shot to death in Lawton back in March. One man has been charged with Jackson's murder, but police do not have a suspect in Tuesday's incident.

Scruggs' nephew agreed to an interview with 7News, but he didn't want to be identified. He said his uncle likes to work out in the yard, but Tuesday night he had some unwanted visitors. After burying his cousin Lavonte Jackson a few short months ago and now, dealing with his uncle being shot, the man said the timing of the two incidents has him doubting it was a random act.

"It makes you wonder how you empty a 15-round clip that all hit the house when it's a drive-by," he said. "It doesn't make sense."

Witnesses tell police there were 15 gunshots, and 7News found at least half of them on one of the cars at the home. Bullet holes riddled the front of the car and the doors. One even went right through the window. Scruggs' nephew doesn't know why anyone would want to shoot his uncle.

"He doesn't do anything but sit out here in the yard," he said. "He doesn't mess with anybody. He's old. It's nonsense."

Others living in the neighborhood are just as concerned.

"It's frightening now," resident Dale Howard said. "I've only been here a year, and that's as close as I've ever come to something like this."

Dale Howard is retired military. He knows what a semiautomatic gun sounds like, and that's exactly what he heard.

"It was something like a machine gun going off," Howard said. "It was rat-tat-tat-tat."

Scruggs was lucky. His nephew said of the 15 shots reportedly fired, only two of them hit Scruggs. Bullets struck him once in the shoulder and once in the leg. Scruggs' nephew can only hope the police get to the bottom of this case soon.

"I'm pretty sure there's more to it," he said.

Police said Scruggs is still in the hospital, but they expect him to be just fine. They haven't made any arrests yet, but they do have shell casings from the shooting.

Police say they've gotten good information from people who saw the shooting. We'll keep you updated and let you know if and when they make an arrest.
